Created in the 1990s, the foundation focuses its efforts heavily on prevention and treatment of this disease. It functions with several goals driving its operation . They include:
- Reducing the impact prostate cancer has on the Australian community and its families
- Speaking as a voice for men who face this disease
- Raising money to fund research efforts in regard prevention, detection, treatment and cures
- Raising overall awareness about this disease, its prevention and treatment
To help men prevent prostate cancer, the foundation suggests men take a three-step approach to prostate health. This involves eating a well-balanced, low-fat diet; taking the right supplements and going in for medical exams as indicated. A good diet and supplements rich in selenium, lycopene and vitamin E are useful in prevention. The need for medical exams can lead to early detection and survival should the condition be present. Inasmuch, the foundation urges men to submit to regular exams starting between the ages of 40 and 50.
Similar to many other prostate cancer foundations around the world, Australia’s promotes prevention through dietary changes, supplements and exams. While these things might not prevent all cases, they can give men a fighting chance.
With an estimated 12,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed each year in Australia, the foundation has much work to be done.
